DRIVE
a) Purpose
a) Purpose
Film - Drive (2011) - Opening scene 3 minutes - 11 minutes Purpose- The purpose of drive is to entertain us by getting the viewer hooked at the beginning of the film. We know that it is to entertain as the sounds used are sounds used to entertain. And we know this as the sounds used create tension.
b) Elements
Elements. Car engine - The car engine increases in sound and because of this we know that there is an intense car chase and this sets a scene to the audience by showing them that they are in a rush and they are more about the quick approach when they are spotted by the helicopter.
Dialog - The police dialog creates tension as it takes the viewer along the journey of the chase with the police and this entertains the audience as it creates tension and the audience have no choice but to listen as all other sound is muffled when the police radio comes on
Background Beat - The background beat used in this opening sequence is is used to create tension and it is played throughout the who scene. And what this shows the audience is that there is no moment where there hearts are not beating rapidly letting the audience empathise with the driver and the two passengers. This becomes louder during moments of tension.
Alarms - We know the sound of an alarm and because of this it immediately entertains the audience because they start to think “I wonder what that alarm is for.” This entertains the audience as they start to think like the driver “ How long will they be?”
The radio- The radio gets played and it starts to document the lakers game where they are very close to winning and this is foreshadowing the event where they ditch the car at the lakers game and walk out next to the police this scene creates a sense of relief of where they have escaped.
C ) MEANING
The meaning the sounds used in this opening sequence. Most of them have the same meaning in my opinion i believe most of them are to enhance audience understanding as the audience knows what these sounds are and immediately recognises the problem. For example The alarm most people know that alarms only go of in places people shouldn't be. Like a bank or a house with a lot of valuables inside of it. As well as the police radios the dialog these things all create tension and make the audience hooked instantly as the immediately know the time setting and what's going on just from a couple of sounds. So the police car the alarms suggest that there is a robbery in place and then the car engine throttle suggest they have been seen and are trying to escape Game
CALL OF DUTY
a) Purpose
- Call of duty modern warfare 2 (2009) The purpose - The sounds in modern warfare ending scene is to make sure that the player is entertained. As that is the last mission over the campaign this needs to be emotional action packed and brilliant.
B )Elements
These sounds make sure of this as you have just crashed a helicopter there is no one around and slowly you make your way find people kill the and then nearly get killed yourself. This ending scene is everything the end of a campaign should be .
Elements Heavy winds - These heavy winds suggest that it is in quite a sparse areas where not a lot of people will be and because of this you can hear sand being moved which suggests there is a sandstorm taking place which shows that they are inside of a desert
Heavy heartbeat- This pumping heartbeat suggests to the audience that the player is in danger of dying as the heartbeat in call of duty represents a sign that means you are close to death. This creates tension for the players as they don't know if they are dying but if this sound keeps up they know they will.
Lots of breathing - The heavy breathing suggests that the player is short for breath and paired up with the heartbeat this grips the player in and makes it impossible to put the controller down because over the course of the campaign you create an emotional attachment to characters just like you would do in films
Footsteps - The footsteps suggest that you are alone at the minute because it is a very loud sound that you can hear if there was a lot of people you would be able to hear them and then you can hear other people's footsteps from the crash and you kill them
Knife swipe - You hear this sound quite a few times because you are killing people who are on the enemy side for example the pilot of the helicopter. And some men knocked out on the floor and because of this this engages the player even more than it normally would as you are killing the people that caused you pain throughout the whole of the campaign.
c )Meaning
Meaning The audiences understanding of everything gets enhanced as theses sounds mainly show the environment are in. Heavy winds sand would suggest that they are in a desert where there is a sandstorm going on. This fits in with the genre conventions because of the sounds you know the game is an action game and you know that something big is about to happen and you can tell the time as you can hear a watch ticking.
THE SIMPSONS

Shouting- The shouting occurs throughout the whole scene and this sound tells us that homer and the kids are in some kind of distress . For example the kids shout at homer when he comes in the room and marge shouts at homer when he hits the kids with the baton.
Gunshots The gunshot signifies the end of the intro as marge shoots homer and then the title comes up and the show begins. The gunshot also tells us that marge is not afraid to join in on the fun and take things to new extremes.
C) Meaning
The meaning. The sounds in this introduction enhance audience understanding as we can tell it is not to serious yet we can also sense a constant theme of horror throughout the whole of the introduction. This also links in with genre conventions as because of the sounds we can tell that this is a horror comedy once again furthering the audiences understanding of the scene at hand.
